Preparing for UltraPulse CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Skin resurfacing with Lumenis® UltraPulse CO2 fractional laser technology is a cutting-edge procedure that uses a carbon dioxide laser to create microscopic channels that trigger the process of new collagen and elastic fiber production, while leaving some unaffected skin in between the channels to reduce healing time. After recovery, the skin is rejuvenated, softer, and smoother.

This procedure is designed to address a range of skin concerns, including:
-
Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Smoothing out facial lines and wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.
-
Sun Damage: Eradicating sunspots, age spots, and uneven skin tone caused by prolonged sun exposure.
-
Scarring: Improving the appearance of acne scars or other types of scars for a smoother complexion.
-
Skin Texture: Enhancing overall skin texture and reducing irregularities.
-
Collagen Stimulation: Stimulating collagen production to promote firmer, more resilient skin.

The benefits of UltraPulse fractional laser skin resurfacing, compared to some other surgical or chemical treatment options include:
-
Precision and Customization: The fractional approach allows precise targeting of specific areas, tailoring the treatment to your unique skin concerns.
-
Versatility: Suitable for various skin types and tones, this procedure can be adapted to address individual needs.
-
Reduced Downtime: Fractionated CO2 laser technology minimizes downtime compared to traditional approaches, allowing you to resume your routine more quickly
-
Single Treatment: The UltraPulse by Lumenis is the world's most advanced and precise cosmetic C02 laser. It can get you the results of other lasers in 1- 2 treatments while still minimizing risks.
What you can expect when scheduled for a Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure
In general, this is the process of getting your skin resurfaced with a fractionated CO2 laser, from beginning to end.
-
Consultation: Begin your journey with a thorough consultation where your healthcare provider assesses your skin, discusses your goals, and determines the suitability of Fractionated CO2 laser skin resurfacing for you.
-
Preparation: Before the procedure, your skin is cleansed, and a topical anesthetic may be applied to ensure your comfort during treatment.
-
Fractionated CO2 Laser Application: Precision is key. The Fractionated CO2 laser is applied in a controlled manner, targeting specific areas of the skin. This fractional approach minimizes downtime and promotes faster healing.
-
Collagen Renewal: The laser not only removes damaged skin but also triggers the body's natural collagen renewal process, contributing to skin elasticity.
-
Post-Treatment Care: Receive instructions on post-treatment care, which may involve using specialized ointments, avoiding sun exposure, and maintaining a gentle skincare routine.
Pre-Operative Instructions for Laser Skin Resurfacing
Before your laser skin resurfacing procedure, your surgeon will provide you with pre-procedure instructions. These instructions may include:
-
Avoid Sun Exposure: Minimize sun exposure and use sunscreen every morning regularly for 2 weeks leading up to your treatment.
-
Discuss Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications, supplements, or skincare products you're using, as some may need adjustment or cessation before the procedure.
-
Hydrate Your Skin: Keep your skin well-moisturized to enhance its condition before the treatment.
-
Avoid Certain Treatments: Refrain from waxing, chemical peels, or other harsh skincare treatments close to the procedure date
-
Patients with Darker Skin: Will need pre and post treatment with Melanex to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation. It should be applied to the target skin twice daily, morning and evening, for minimum 2 weeks but ideally up to 4 - 6 weeks.
-
History of Herpes Simplex: You will need to take anti-viral medication 2 days prior and 5 days after to prevent an outbreak.

Adhering to the pre-procedure instructions provided to you will help prepare your skin, ensuring a successful laser skin resurfacing session.
Post-Operative Care & Instructions
Following your laser skin resurfacing procedure, adhere to these post-operative instructions:

First 2 Weeks Post-Procedure Care:
-
Avoidance of Sun: Keep the treated area protected from direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks. This means skin needs to be shaded, not just sunscreen.
-
Cleaning: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Cleanse the treated area gently with a mix of cool water and white vinegar at least 4 times per day. Make the water with 1 teaspoon of white vinegar in 1 cups of distilled water. Use a soaked soft washcloth or soaked gauze and lay it on the treated face for 10 minutes.
-
Ointment Barrier: You can use any of Aquaphor, Skinfix, Vaseline, or coconut oil. You want to keep your face covered continuously for the first 4-7 days. Do not wipe off the ointment before doing your vinegar soaks. Apply a generous layer after each soak as well.
-
No Routine Skin Products for the first 2 weeks, but can be resumed and encouraged thereafter.

Recovery Timeline:
-
Days 1-7: Expect redness, swelling, and potential skin peeling during this initial phase. Follow skincare routines noted above to aid in healing.
-
Week 2: Redness and swelling start to diminish, although skin may still be sensitive. Avoid sun exposure and adhere to prescribed skincare regimens.
-
Weeks 3-6: Skin continues to improve, although some pinkness may persist. Resume normal skincare routines but remain diligent about sun protection.
-
Months 3-6: Most visible side effects typically resolve, revealing improved skin texture and tone. Continue sun protection and maintain a healthy skincare routine

As your skin heals, you'll notice ongoing improvements in texture and tone. The results of Fractionated CO2 laser skin resurfacing can be long-lasting when combined with proper post-procedure care.

Potential Risks of Laser Skin Resurfacing:
While generally safe, it's crucial to discuss your medical history and expectations with your healthcare provider.
Potential risks include:
-
Temporary changes in skin color
-
Scarring (temporary or permanent)
-
Infection
